Volkswagen unveils bold ID. EVERY1 concept car

Revealed as an indirect successor to the quite excellent Up!, the ID. EVERY1 concept offers a preview into Volkswagen’s upcoming entry-level electric car, which will likely be named ID.1.

The production car is set to go on sale in mainland Europe in 2027, with sales in the UK set to follow at some point in 2028. Pricing is still to be comfirmed, but expect a starting price of around €20,000. The ID. EVERY1 concept will sit below the more expensive and bigger ID. 2all, which the production version of that car is scheduled to be revealed in 2026.

Both the ID.1 and ID.2 will sit on a new version of Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, which in these applications, is front-wheel drive. This allows the ID.1 to offer top of the class levels of space and efficiency.

The ID. EVERY1 concept offers promising technical specifications too. The car is powered by a newly designed electric motor which delivers 95bhp, a top speed of 80mph and an estimated range of 155 miles. However, it is worth remember that this is a small car, designed for cities, so it doesn’t need a massive battery, powerful motors or a 500 mile range.

Speaking of its size, the ID. EVERY1 measures in at a modest 3,880mm, making it slightly bigger than the Up!, but smaller than the existing Polo. This means there is space for four adults (including the driver) and 305 litres of boot space.

Styling is subjective so we won’t cover it too much but the ID. EVERY1 certainly has a bold look. We see a bit of Up! influence to it, especially at the side and the rear of the car. Inside offers a fresh take on what already exists in VW’s more recent ID. models, with a modern colour pallet on display.

Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer said: “The ID. EVERY1 is the Champions League of automobile manufacturing and represents the last piece of the puzzle on our way to the widest model selection in the volume segment.

“We will then offer every customer the right car with the right drive system, including affordable, all-electric entry-level mobility.”

The Volkswagen design pillars of strong, stable and some ‘secret sauce’ are evident in the EVERY1. Volkswagen Head of Design Andreas Mindt said: “Our ambition was to create something bold yet accessible.

“The ID. EVERY1 has a self-assured appearance but remains likeable, thanks to details such as the dynamic front lights and the ‘smiling’ rear.

“These design elements make it more than just a car: they give it character and an identity that people can relate to.”

What do we think?

Inital impressions are promising. We like the design, the technical specifications seem fine but the price seems like the only catch. £20,000 is a lot of money, especially when you can get (at the time of writing) a low-mileage e-Up! for £10,000.

Even when you look at the competition, the ID.1 is going to go up against cars such as the Fiat Grande Panda and the upcoming Renault Twingo, both of which are set to be cheaper and offer more range.

However, we’ve been proved wrong before…
