So, the boys are back again with another episode of Car Trek. This series has been a hit so far on YouTube and we have been thoroughly enjoying it. Car Trek has been about for nearly two weeks now and has hit trending on YouTube and has accumulated nearly 3.5 million views at the time of writing this review.
To catch you up, Tavarish, Ed Bolian and Tyler Hoover have all bought three budget supercars for less than a well equipped Corvette C8. This means we have a Ferrari 360 Spider, Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder and an Aston Martin Vantage V12 S all bought for cheap. This sounds like a recipe for disaster to most people, but this didn’t stop the trio from going ahead.
Part one consisted of the trio showing off their cars and introducing us to them while driving around Florida, and in part two, the trio realised how much their cars were going to cost them in terms of repair. Now in part 3, the repairs are done and the budget supercars are faced with their biggest challenges yet…
The economy run
First of all, supercars aren’t exactly the most economical things in the world, with most averaging 15-20mpg if you’re being careful. So, it made me chuckle slightly when the trio were given an economy challenge to drive 200 miles to a mysterious location on one full tank of petrol, and were not allowed to use highways. And immediately, they were caught up in traffic. That’s something we can all relate to.
The journey would have been fairly uninteresting if it wasn’t for Ed’s diffuser being slightly broken and preventing him from going at any speeds other than crawling. This got too much so they pulled over where they got sent a new challenge…
The quarter mile
Not to play into stereotypes but this wouldn’t be a proper American car series without a good drag strip. If you know anything about cars and America, they love a good quarter mile time with many enthusiasts taking to the strip in highly modified muscle cars or anything else they can get their hands on. However, most don’t go to a drag strip in hastily repaired, cheap supercars.
The trio were set a challenge to beat the original quarter mile times as set by the manufactures for the cars when they were at peak potential…so brand new with fully functional parts. Nevertheless, the times to beat were 12.3 seconds for the Aston, 12.5 in the Ferrari and 12.7 in the Lambo. These are respectable times but you have to remember that these cars are in various states of disrepair.
We’re not going to say the actual times the trio set but it’s fair to say that the actual times were slower than what the manufactures state.
The track challenge
After a few clutch burning runs on the drag strip, the cars are taken to a track to face yet another challenge. The aim of a challenge is for each host to effectively review their cars while telling us about three quirks and features of said cars while doing a lap. However, their is a quirk in the challenge itself, as each time one of the three messes up, they have to restart the review again, with the time ticking away.
This segment shows us that Ed is almost a natural at reviewing cars while driving them, giving us a Jeremy Clarkson-esque style of overview to his flood damaged Lambo. This could be thanks to his past experience working in the exotic car sales industry. The other two, well they had to prepare in advance. Hoovie’s lap started off as a Doug DeMuro impersonation but then progressively went downhill from there…needless to say it was well, subpar. Tavarish had similar difficulty with the Aston, he took his time and got through it like how I got through presentations at university…with lots of mistakes and rushing things.
Wrapping things up
The episode was wrapped up with a cliffhanger with the trio receiving a challenge saying that they have to take their cars to a dyno to measure how much horsepower they have lost over the years.
This episode was much more enjoyable than the last for most people. We like watching them in the workshop but it’s easy to see why people would prefer this part than the last.
