The Ford Mondeo has been a long-term resident of the mid-size family car class for the past 28 years and has seen four generations of success. The Mondeo is a regular sighting in Europe and rest of the world, including North America where it is sold as the Fusion.
Currently, the Mondeo is sold as a hatchback, saloon and a practical estate version, sporting a mix of petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains, but weirdly, there isn’t a performance version, as that has been absent since the departure of the ST220, which went away with the second generation in 2007.
However, Ford are set to mix up the Mondeo line by replacing the traditional body styles with an all-new electrified crossover which is set to come in the next few years, and will become the fifth-generation of the Mondeo, and the next generation of Fusion for the North American market.
Details of the new Mondeo are sparse but we do know it’ll feature an all new coupe like, crossover design similar to what we’ve seen from the new Puma and Mustang Mach-E crossovers. The interior is all-new for Ford too, as it incorporates a full-width display system which spans the entire dashboard, easily making it one of the biggest display clusters in the car business.
Again, it’s unclear what will power the next Mondeo but expect a mix of plug-in hybrid power and full electric power for Ford’s mid-size family car. From what we’ve seen from test cars (we won’t post them here), the current prototypes are edging closer to production read so expect the finished car to go on sale sometime at the end of 2021, when it’ll go on sale as a 2022 model.
